AN OPEN LETTER TO ROBERT REICH
You have spent your lifetime in public service and education. You have helped give voice to the need for progressive solutions that can once again carry this country onward and upward, after being stuck in slow gear for so long. You know the terrain and you’ve never stopped advocating for the change we require to move forward.
In your note to Bernie the day following the 2016 California Primary, you noted:
“Your courage in taking on the political establishment has emboldened millions of us to stand up and demand our voices be heard.
Regardless of what you decide to do now, you have ignited a movement that will fight onward. We will fight to put more progressives into the House and Senate. We will fight at the state level. We will organize for the 2020 presidential election.
We will not succumb to cynicism. We are in it for the long haul. We will never give up.”
In that spirit, we ask that you, as a capstone to a storied career, run for Senate to represent the State of California in 2018. We urge you to make a leap similar to that of Elizabeth Warren in 2012, seize the lever of power, and use it to effect the change we all want to see. We need some hope right now – hope that is concrete, not simply a term casually thrown around as a tag-line. If you step up to the plate, you will give millions of progressives, not only in California but across the nation, a greatly needed injection of that authentic hope.
We need that hope now, representing California in the United States Senate. We need you, and if you, Mr. Secretary, commit to declaring your candidacy, California's grassroots progressives will commit to the challenge of electing you to serve our state.
